Eggs

You'd think that if the low-carb diet craze taught us anything, it's the importance of protein. In a study published in Nutrition Metabolism, dieters who increased their protein intake to 30 percent of their diet ate nearly 450 fewer calories a day and lost about 11 pounds over the 12-week study without employing any other dietary measures. How does protein work? First, your body uses more calories to break down protein food than other foods. In addition, protein helps you keep muscle mass as you’re losing weight, and muscle burns more calories than fat. Finally, protein dampens hunger better than carbs, which also helped the protein group lose weight.

Include protein at every meal, especially breakfast. Eggs are packed with a variety of nutrients including protein, zinc, iron and vitamins A, D, E and B12, but contain just 85 calories each meal. Eggs are on the top inexpensive fat burning foods. A hard-boiled egg makes a great snack, especially when you might otherwise reach for a candy bar. Eating eggs for breakfast makes you feel fuller for longer so that you eat less at your next few meals. This is great news if you’re trying to lose weight as it means you may find it easier to cut calories without feeling hungry.
